The shattered memories

Inspiration

Storytelling is a big part of my life and it includes me sharing stories with my friends and family. One time, when a friend and I were reminiscing about something that happened, we realized that what I remember about what happened was not the same as what my friend remembers about what happened. This inspired the idea for The Shattered Memories.

Purpose

This project is created to raise awareness of memory loss and its effects on the sufferer and those around them. I wanted viewers to understand and live vicariously through the perspective of someone who is suffering from memory loss.

synopsis

The key message is what you remember may not always be true. The old lady is trapped and lives in her own memory. In her memory, she is a young woman who is going to see her lover. She keeps tracking her memory pieces and unlimitedly repeating them.

Process

My  challenge was about communicating the story. I only had 50 seconds (or less) to tell my story and I wanted the audience to be able to not just follow along but also to feel a certain way.  To help this, I went through 18 iterations of the script and, as a result of feedback, I chose to use the language “I and You” rather than “I and him” so that the viewer would be able to really get how the character is thinking and feeling. For the ending, I wanted to reveal a twist to the audience.  Through user testing and more research, I chose to focus on my character’s eyes to allow the audience to look into what she’s thinking and feeling, and also to look out at what she’s actually seeing. So I included a scene which allows the user to zoom into the character’s eyes to transition and reveal the final twist.
